Favorite Elopement Memory: A Photographer's Perspective

Janis, can you share a particularly memorable or touching moment you’ve witnessed during an elopement photoshoot and how it left a lasting impression on you as a photographer?
Janis –“Well, I like seeing people in love, in general. And elopements are the place and time when you witness the two people connect, and the love I see, I bring it home to my family.”

Chateau Challain's Role in Creating Intimate Elopements
Janis, in your experience, how does the ambience and architecture of Chateau Challain contribute to creating intimate and private elopement moments?

Janis- “Chateau Challain’s contribution to intimate elopement moments is twofold: the venue, its stunning architecture and landscapes, and the exceptional people who bring it to life.
I was in awe from the first time I laid eyes on the chateau fifteen years ago. Its timeless elegance and unique character are unmatched. The castle and its surroundings are a photographer’s dream at any time of day or year, offering a plethora of captivating scenes. The interiors, from the grand hall to the ballroom, music room, and the iconic staircase, are not just visually stunning but also fully accessible. Unlike other venues that feel more like museums with their ‘do not touch’ restrictions, Chateau Challain invites you to truly inhabit the space, which is invaluable for creating authentic photographs.”

The grounds are equally versatile, with the bluebell forest, cherry tree alley, sunflower fields, and vivid autumnal trees providing a year-round canvas for intimate moments. The accessibility and variety of these settings allow for spontaneous and private moments to unfold naturally.
Then, there’s the unparalleled hospitality of the Chateau Challain staff. Their willingness to go above and beyond is what truly sets this venue apart. Whether sourcing a boat for a shot on the lake, moving the majestic lions for a more dramatic scene, or adding the perfect floral touch, the staff are always eager to assist. They understand the importance of details, such as a glass of cognac for the groom, ensuring that every element is in place for the perfect shot.
In essence, the ambience, architecture, and people of Chateau Challain collectively create an environment where intimate and private moments are not just possible but are encouraged and enhanced, making each elopement uniquely memorable.”

The Magic of Spontaneity: Elopement Photography Tips
Elopements often thrive on spontaneity. Can you provide insights into how you embrace the unexpected and turn it into magical moments during an elopement photoshoot?

Janis – “Spontaneity is one of the key factors to uniqueness, so I encourage the couple to be spontaneous. Yes, I do direct them, but I also let them be.. because the photos are theirs, not mine.. I take them, and when photographing, I’m very flexible – I follow the moment and the light.. for example, if it’s January and it starts snowing while you dine.. I’ll take you out .. with no coat on!”

Elopements at Chateau Challain: A Photographer's Insight
Janis, could you share an instance where you felt the intimacy of an elopement was exceptionally captured through your lens, and how does Chateau Challain contribute to these extraordinary moments?

Janis – “Here we come to one of my favourite photographs with the couple in the bluebell forest – this is a special time of the year. Usually, in mid-April, bluebells blossom, and the chateau forest looks amazing with ivies. You mustn’t feel the photographer’s presence in a photo like this. This makes it intimate, and it’s only them and the forest.”

Advice for Couples Planning an Elopement
Janis, do you have any advice for couples planning a destination elopement?
Janis – “When planning an elopement, I advise couples from a photographer’s perspective to be mindful of the timing, especially concerning natural light. For instance, try not to schedule dinner during the golden hour in the evening, which is prime time for capturing those warm, glowing portraits that are so magical.
For brides, consider the functionality of your attire. While the appeal of a grand dress is undeniable, it’s important to balance aesthetics with mobility. I always encourage wearing something that allows you to move freely. Opt for a lighter, perhaps shorter dress, and shoe comfort is vital. You want to walk, dance, and embrace your partner without restrictions. This helps in creating photographs that are vibrant and full of life.”

Capturing Intimacy: The Art of Elopement Photography
Janis, from your perspective, what makes elopements such a special and unique genre of photography, particularly in the context of destination settings like Chateau Challain?

Janis – “I like to shoot elopements because you can get out of the ordinary – you are more flexible with timings, and you can plan the day around times when the light is right and around locations where the environments are suitable. Elopements are more intimate than weddings because the couple doesn’t have to deal with guests and stress. They can genuinely devote themselves to each other and connect for real – and that’s what you see in the photographs. When it comes to Chateau Challain – there’s nothing ordinary about this place – you can be as creative as you want – the venue is very accommodating when it comes to flexibility, like shooting in different spaces, environments, any time of the day.”
